Profile: George Bates, surfer & illustrator
George Bates' motto: It's not just a statement, it is an experience.
It's a motto he doesn't take lightly.
George's illustrations have appeared in the publications such as LA Times, BIG magazine, and Maxim, have gone into campaigns including American Express and MTV, and have illustrated a recently published children's book. When he's not working in his sketchbook or creating collages, teaching at Pratt or Parsons, or spending time with his wife, designer Elisa Bates, and faithful Boston Terrier, you'll find him surfing the Rockaways and beyond.
George recently came to Dot Editions for art reproduction of two of his recent works. The watercolor featured above will be framed and sold at the upcoming Affordable Art Fair. While he was here, George told us that he's recently been commissioned by the MTA to design a public art installation for the New York subway. His drawings are being fabricated into a mural made of glass blocks, which will be built into a wall of an outdoor subway station, so sunlight can illuminate them. Appropriately, the subway station is at Rockaway Beach. Read more about the project on his blog.
