Photo-editor/photographer/Salaam Garage workshop leader Maggie Soladay will offer her input on what she looks for when hiring photographers for editorial assignments. As a photo editor, Maggie sees hundreds of portfolios, both online and in print. As a result, she can offer useful insight into aspects of producing portfolios that every photographer should consider.

Bookbinder Judith Ivry will also join us, to show varieties of custom bookbinding and portfolio boxes that she has produced. Judy has been an independent bookbinder for over 25 years, offering the highest standards of binding for her clients. She works out of her studio in Manhattan, as well as teaching and lecturing about binding techniques.

This Wednesday kicks off the New York Photo Festival in DUMBO.

Dot Editions just completed printing a solo exhibition by Julienne Schaer that opens in conjunction with the  opening of  NYPH10.

Julienne Schaer began as a forensic photographer for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, and now specializes in editorial and event photographer. The work she is showing is from an ongoing project documenting the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge Park, from an abandoned industrial area, into a lush waterfront park.

Since the beginning demolition of the Port Authority Piers on March 13, 2008 Julienne Schaer has documented the transformation of Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront into a world-class park. As the site transformed from a civil engineering project to a scenic park, the images showcase the park’s sustainable infrastructure and construction methods, as well as showing the dramatic panoramas of the park

Manjari Sharma will present her work on “The Shower Series.” Having moved to the US from India in 2001, Manjari attended the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio, then moved back to India to travel and photograph. She moved to NYC in 2007, where she’s been shooting for clients such as AOL, American Baby, Penguin Books, and others, as well as exhibiting her personal work.

Christina Paige attended the ICP’s program in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism, and was one of PDN’s 30 in 2008. Before becoming a photographer, she worked as a clinical social worker with Spanish-speaking communities in California and Massachusetts. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.

Gabriela Herman hails from Newton, MA, attended Wesleyan University, and post-graduation, traveled extensively, landing in Brazil where she lived for four years. She has since moved to New York, where her photography has garnered her many awards, including Resource Magazine’s 10 Best 10, Adorama’s “One to Watch”, and was nominated for a New York Photo Festival Award. She shoots for many editorial clients, and has exhibited her work extensively.

Julia Gillard was born in Illinois and studied political science before she began taking pictures. She is a graduate of the International Center of Photography’s Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program. Her work has been exhibited at The Brooklyn Museum, The New York Historical Society, The International Center of Photography and has been published in Mother Jones, New York Magazine and The New York Times. She lives in Brooklyn.

The event is a solo photography exhibition by Haik Kocharian, at the James Cohan Gallery (533 West 26th St), featuring photographs documenting African Services’ HIV programs in Ethiopia. The benefit cocktail gallery for this one-night event is on May 17, 7-9pm; individual tickets are $100.

In the event’s third year, African Services Committee has teamed up with Kocharian to put a face to the widening circle of children and their families who against all odds are now thriving thanks to access to HIV treatment and small business loans from African Services’ Positive Kids events. Attendees will get a raw and inspiring look at the families benefiting from the work of African Services’ through the lens of Kocharian.

“I have long had an interest in Ethiopia,” Kocharian explains when asked about his involvement in the project. “It has a lot of similarities to Armenia, where I was born…the strong Christian Orthodox influence, its similar alphabet, and land-locked geography. When I joined with African Services a long-time dream and desire became a purpose.”

Since 2003, African Services Committee has worked on the frontlines of the global HIV pandemic in Ethiopia. With three community-based HIV clinics in operation, ASC has provided testing and care to over 80,000 people.  Kocharian was given rare behind-the-scenes access into the lives of the children and families benefiting from the treatment and care provided by African Services’, and with this he presents the power and resilience of his subjects.

“I would like people to have an opportunity to look through a window with me,” explains Kocharian about the exhibition. “We are showing simple stories of children and their families as they struggle, yet they are looking optimistically toward the future. I hope people will make an emotional connection, and realize that at the core we are all the same, and we all need each other. By reaching out and helping, we are all improving our own lives, and ultimately creating a better world.”

Born in Armenia, Haik Kocharian has lived in New York City since 1996. Kocharian pursued film directing at Brooklyn College where he eventually shifted the focus of his studies to photography; ultimately creating a unique photojournalistic style that combines all of these influences. Kocharian’s work has been exhibited in notable venues around the city including New York’s 92YTribeca, Robin Rice Gallery, Galerie Mourlot, Village Quill Writer’s Space, Soho Photo Gallery, and the legendary Puck Building. Additionally, his images have also been widely published in international magazines such as Smithsonian Magazine, Elle, and Madame Figaro.

Dot Editions’ Rocky Kenworthy and Linn Edwards are each donating a photograph to A Photograph for the Future, an auction raising money to benefit the building of a children’s health clinic in Pantanal, Brazil. The prints will be displayed and available for purchase on May 13 at Books Import, a store in Milan dedicated to international illustrated books (updated info) a gallery in Milan called Antonia Jannone. The auction is being organized in part by friend of the studio, Barbara Gentile.

About the campaign, from the Amici del Pantanal press release:
Pantanal is a vast area in Brazil, bordering Bolivia and Paraguay, a tropical wetland and the world’s largest wetland of any kind. The population’s main problems there are poverty and lack of infrastructure, like hospitals and schools.

At the outskirts of Belem, the main city rises a Mission guided by Frei apollonio Troesi, which features a school and a nursery caring for over 3OO children daily.

There is a project to build a clinic there, to provide free healthcare and health education to the children and their families. This project is lead by two Italian pediatricians, angela Brancaccio and Paola Sgaramella, and their organization Associazione Amici del Pantanal.

The amount needed to complete the clinic is € 5O,OOO. Half of this has already been raised through other initiatives, but to speed up the process even more we are inviting you to be part of BRAZIL: a photograph for the future.

Dot Editions first HDR test in 2008

Tuesday April 6: Dot Editions’ Rocky Kenworthy will give an informative discussion on the potentials of using HDR, a special event with ASMPNY at Tabula Rasa Studio.

As the term “HDR” is fast beginning to occupy more and more of the photographers mind, we will define HDR and how to use it as a tool not a look. How it’s being used in the commercial world of photography today as well as the fine art world. What is the future of HDR and how you as a photographer can start utilizing this powerful tool.

Dot Editions’ second Show & Tell event will feature an evening of artist talks from four of PDN’s 30 2010 winners:  Adrian Mueller, Gabriele Stabile, Elizabeth Weinberg, Reed Young.

Adrian Mueller draws upon emotion and memories for his concise still-life and food photography. He co-founded the photography studio collective, Fabrik Studios, in Manhattan ten years ago, where he shoots for a variety of advertising clients such as BBDO, AOL, Chase, Macy’s, Martha Stewart Living, and many more. He has also won Luerzers archive for the 200 best advertising photographer worldwide 2010/11.

Gabriele Stabile uses his intimate, dark images to tell stories for editorial clients such as The FADER and Gourmet Magazine. His long-term personal project, “Refugee Motels” documents many refugees’ first night in the United States. As they arrive in the United States, he photographs these individuals’ first moments in a new country, documenting their feelings of anxiety, excitement, homesickness and loneliness.

Elizabeth Weinberg got her start in college working for a music management company, which granted her access to a variety of bands. Since then, her portraits of musicians have led to editorial and advertising assignments that have taken her all over the country. Her sense of adventure as well as her ease with her subjects is evident in her portraiture.

Reed Young uses strobe lighting in environments to achieve an other-worldly lighting style in his documentary portraiture. His photographs come from a sincere interest in the human perspective, and his assignments have taken him around the world.

Photographers, artists, and the pubic are invited to attend an evening of sharing artwork and experiences when these four photographers present their work.

This event will take place April 20, 2010, 6-9pm at the Dot Editions studio in the Gowanus/Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn (located near the F, G, M, or R trains at the 4th Ave/9th Street stop).

Dot Editions first HDR test in 2008

With the advances in high ISO sensor technology that exceeds 100,000 sensitivity (such as in the Nikon D3s and the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV), single capture HDR is on its way.

What needs to happen before it arrives is the dissemination of how to utilize this powerful tool. This will come in the form of education and familiarizing yourself with how HDR will change how we capture, edit, store
and display photography.
